3 myths of cheap shared hosting packages 10 ways to make the tech support guys cry

My experiences

Hostican

As you may read in the comment section of the previous post, this blog is hosted at Hostican (on a shared hosting server). I pay annually for the Tera-Host package which costs $11.95/month (of course it costs 15% less if you use a Hostican discount code like luckyyou-12 ). The price is a little bit high considering it’s just a shared hosting package, but to tell the truth Hostican’s service is great…at least that’s what I was thinking until I found out that their server didn’t like my attempt to run proxy sites on it. :D Yep, I know it was a stupid idea to host proxy sites on a shared hosting account, but I wanted to try it. And it didn’t work, because it used too much resources. So they suspended my hosting account, and I had to change a hosting plan, and that’s when I said: Alright, let’s try the VPS Rage package. That was a good choice, finally there were no problems with the hosting, but I wanted to separate my proxy sites from my other websites, so I decided to move them to another hosting company. And I moved my proxy sites to Tech Entrance, because they have proxy hosting plans for the lazy proxy owners. :) After I chose another home for some of my websites I changed back the hosting package from VPS Rage to Tera-Host. I really like Tera-Host package because it takes 15 seconds to install a Wordpress blog, and with cPanel it’s really easy to create new email accounts. The support at Hostican is great (it’s much better than at Dot5hosting…but that’s another story), they are really helpful and they respond right after you asked for help.

Why does Hostican’s service rock?

  • Their support always responds asap, there was only one time when I had to wait 15 minutes for a response. -When I changed hosting plans, they moved the files, and set up everything in a short time.
  • They provide a stable service.
  • If you choose the Tera-Host package, than you can host as many sites (except proxy sites :D) on your hosting account as you want.
  • They have cPanel and Fantastico installed on their servers, so it takes about 15 seconds to install a Wordpress blog. :)

Why does Hostican’s service suck?

  • When my little proxy experiment went bad, they didn’t tell me that they suspend my account. Fortunately I discovered it, and the support guys moved every file to the VPS in about an hour after I agreed to change the hosting plan to VPS Rage.
  • The Tera-Host package is a little bit overpriced, but at least they provide reliable service.

    Charles,

The second issue does seem a blight against their reputation, however all hosts have had problems in the past and will continue to do so in the future - at the moment, Hostican appears cleaner than the rest of them.

As for the first guy, he’s an idiot if he’s complaining about 15 minutes of downtime, seriously - his website has more than 1k subscribers, he should stop being a cheapskate and move to dedicated server rather than depending on a VPS. :)
