Cheap Wordpress Hosting Packages

If you are a newbie, or you don’t want to spend more than 10 seconds on installing Wordpress on your web host, than you need a “Wordpress friendly” hosting package. :) What does it mean? You need a web host that has Fantastico installed on it’s servers. What is Fantastico? It’s an online application installer, and with the help of this script library it takes only 10 seconds to install Wordpress on your web host. Fantastico is fantastic, and it’s useful for everybody -not just for bloggers-, that’s why I created a list of the biggest hosting companies that useFantastico on their servers. Here is the list:

Hostgator

Hostgator Cheap Wordpress Hosting

If you use the coupon code wordpress than the cost of the first month’s hosting is only 1 cent. Although I haven’t tried Hostgator’s hosting service, my friends love the “Baby” package which costs $7.95/month. If I wasn’t satisfied with Hostican’s service, I’d try this offer.

Hostican

This blog is hosted at Hostican, and I like their service. You can read the Hostican shared hosting review here.

Lunarpages

Lunarpages answers the phone when you call them!

I’ve read positive reviews about their hosting service, but I haven’t tried it yet.

I haven’t reviewed or tried the services of the following companies, the only reason I included them in the list is that they have Fantastico installed on their servers.

My experiences

Hostican

As you may read in the comment section of the previous post, this blog is hosted at Hostican (on a shared hosting server). I pay annually for the Tera-Host package which costs $11.95/month (of course it costs 15% less if you use a Hostican discount code like luckyyou-12 ). The price is a little bit high considering it’s just a shared hosting package, but to tell the truth Hostican’s service is great…at least that’s what I was thinking until I found out that their server didn’t like my attempt to run proxy sites on it. :D Yep, I know it was a stupid idea to host proxy sites on a shared hosting account, but I wanted to try it. And it didn’t work, because it used too much resources. So they suspended my hosting account, and I had to change a hosting plan, and that’s when I said: Alright, let’s try the VPS Rage package. That was a good choice, finally there were no problems with the hosting, but I wanted to separate my proxy sites from my other websites, so I decided to move them to another hosting company. And I moved my proxy sites to Tech Entrance, because they have proxy hosting plans for the lazy proxy owners. :) After I chose another home for some of my websites I changed back the hosting package from VPS Rage to Tera-Host. I really like Tera-Host package because it takes 15 seconds to install a Wordpress blog, and with cPanel it’s really easy to create new email accounts. The support at Hostican is great (it’s much better than at Dot5hosting…but that’s another story), they are really helpful and they respond right after you asked for help.

Why does Hostican’s service rock?

When you’re a newbie, and you want to create only one Wordpress blog, you don’t want to pay $20-$30/month for the hosting service. It’s ok, and as a newbie you really don’t need a VPS or a dedicated server to handle your tiny Wordpress blog, that receives like 200-300 unique visitors per day. So let’s see what are the pros and cons of low cost hosting:

The myth of huge disk space

1. Pro: You get a disk space of 100 GB, 300 GB or even 1 TB!
Con: These companies oversell their resources. If you go with the cheap hosting plans, don’t even dream about creating a porn video site and hosting 90 GB of videos. :D

Tricky price tags
2. Pro: Yay, these webhosting packages cost only $6-$10/month.
Con: Well if you want to pay monthly or quarterly, than in 99% of the cases you have to pay more than $6-$10/month because only those customers get this discounted price ($6-$10/month) who choose the ‘annual payment’ option. If you want to pay only quarterly than the cost of the hosting plan can increase by $2-$3/month.

The myth of huge bandwidth…
3. Pro: Your account’s monthly bandwidth limit is 3000 GB…
Con: Again, they oversell their resources. Why? Because they’re sure that 99.9999999% of their customers won’t reach even 10% of the monthly bandwidth limit. But if you have a really successful site, a website that uses a lot of bandwidth, and CPU/RAM, they will suspend your account in no time.

Alright, before you ask yourself: If these companies lie about these three things, why should I choose any low cost hosting package?

The answer is simple: Well mate, when you get to the point that you need the power of a VPS for your site, you’ll probably make enough money to cover the costs of a VPS hosting service. Maybe you don’t believe what I say… if you don’t believe me, please take a look at my friend’s Jason Pereira’s blog. Over 350 people subscribed to his blog’s feed, his blog’s Alexa rank is at 60k, and he uses a cheap shared hosting plan at Hostican to host it.
